I keep going on about how everyone in New England, especially Maine, is very nice. It seems like almost everyone is upbeat. However, a recent study conducted by WalletHub claims that other cities, out of New England, have happier citizens.

It seems that one's happiness can be based on more than who and what you surround yourself with.

WalletHub went on to rank 182 cities in the U.S. by their happiness. They did this by looking at factors such as life satisfaction scores, depression rates, physical and emotional health, income growth, employment rates, job satisfaction, and weather.

What really makes a city happy? I would think it's the people and what is around the city. I totally expected at least one New England city to be in the top 10, but I was wrong.

With all that New England has to offer, how could one of our cities not be in the top 10?

According to WalletHub, Portland, ME, is the happiest city in New England coming in at number 31. Boston, MA is not far behind at number 36.

Back in 2018, U.S. News & World Report ranked Maine as one of the best states to live in, and even though that is in the past I agree. Portland especially is an amazing place to live.

Maine has so much to offer, so let us talk about that for a minute.

The People

The people that reside in Maine are extremely nice. I have not come in contact with anyone that has been rude or at least not helpful. It seems like everyone wants to talk to each other and just say "hi."

Weather

Yes, snow can be annoying. We need to plow, shovel, and make sure that we leave earlier for work. However, in Maine, we are able to experience all four seasons, and what is not to love about that?

Scenery

There is so much to see when in Maine. We have mountains, beaches, and so many trails to explore.

Things to Do

Maine offers so many things to do. You can go for a hike, go shopping at one of the outlets or malls, check out one of the many lighthouses, and even island hop. There are so many places to eat (should I remind you of our famous whoopie pies), explore and enjoy the nightlife.

I'm sure there are a million reasons that I can come up with to state why Maine is a great place to live. So although I don't want to argue with statistics, I am going to have to.

Portland, ME should be much higher on the list of happiest cities in the U.S.
