When it comes to winter in Maine, I'm oftentimes reminded of the iconic "box of chocolates" scene from the movie "Forest Gump."

You remember that line, don't you? "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get."

Oh, and don't forget the Southern accent when you say it.

When you take a look at how the season has gone so far, the warmer-than-normal temperatures align with forecasts we got from the Old Farmer's Almanac, which predicted that Maine would experience winter temperatures ranging from 4 to 6 degrees higher than average.

The Almanac also anticipated that the coldest periods would occur in mid-December and late February.

Additionally, precipitation levels have varied across the state. While specific December data is limited, the Old Farmer's Almanac forecasted below-normal precipitation for the region.

However, according to a Facebook post from popular Maine meteorologist Roger Griswold, things could change rapidly for us as we move through the first part of the new year. Chilling cold and copious snowfall could soon be on the horizon for The Pine Tree State.

In a recent Facebook post, Roger said in part,

With the New Year will come a HUGE discussion of brutal cold, east coast snowstorms, and even a possible blizzard. That's because all the ingredients for an old fashion New England wintery January appear to be coming together over the next 10 days.

Roger goes on to say that he is confident that 'cold is coming'. While he is confident that the cold will arrive soon in Maine, the timing of a possible blizzard is still up in the air, both literally and figuratively.

Will it be a repeat of the infamous blizzard of '78? Who knows. What we do know, is Maine is long overdue for a major snow event. Love it or hate it, you live in Maine- it's what we all signed up for.
