As Dan Woodward of Bowie Bros. directed, Jeff Tardiff used his backhoe with the finesse of a concert pianist to gently dig through the frost and down to the pipeline without hitting it.

A short time later came a phrase I was waiting and hoping for.

"We just broke through something," Dan yelled from the hole he was standing in next to my well cap. He had been pumping hot water into my main water line for a while and slowly....so slowly and steadily, it was going farther into the line as ice melted.

Unfortunately, the only way we could get to the ice, which was about 70 feet away under my driveway, was to dig up the well at the cap and unhook the line from the pitless adapter. No, I'm not sure what the pitless is either, but it's pretty cool "well talk."

After 5 days with no running water and several trips to the China-Dine-ah to get water and to my daughter, Michelle's, house to shower, I flipped the switch. I gleefully watched the pressure gauge on the tank start to go up.

"We've got pressure!" I yelled up the stairs from the basement.

I could hear Dan's husky voice screaming in delight, too, as though it was his own water. That made me feel good.

Now, we just need to remember to leave a small stream running from the faucet until the frost gets out of the ground, which should be no sooner than mid-August.

Water...I'll never take it for granted again!
