Police in Skowhegan have made an arrest following a series of vandalism incidents that left headstones and statues damaged at a local cemetery.

Investigators say the destruction happened over the past week at Southside Cemetery, where multiple headstones and angel statues were knocked over or broken. The damage quickly drew concern from the community, given the emotional significance of the site for many families.

WGME reported that after looking into the incidents, police arrested 28-year-old Christian Newton of Skowhegan. He’s now facing charges of aggravated criminal mischief and interference with a cemetery or burial ground.

Newton was taken to the Somerset County Jail, where his bail was set at $2,500.

Authorities say the case is far from closed. Police believe additional people may have been involved in the vandalism and are continuing to follow leads.

Skowhegan Police Chief David Bucknam called the damage “needless destruction,” saying it has had a real impact on the community and the families connected to the cemetery. He’s urging anyone else involved to come forward and take responsibility, the news station reported.

Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to contact the Skowhegan Police Department at (207) 474-6908.

Creepy Maine Cryptids

Maine has everything needed to support a healthy -- and scary -- population of cryptids. The state is remote with lots of fields, forests, rivers, and lakes -- all of which can be home to the elusive creatures in the gallery below. The photos below were generated by artificial intelligence from documented descriptions of the cryptids. Come on. How else are we supposed to get photos of such elusive -- and maybe mythical? -- creatures?
