This morning, I saw a TikTok video of a woman being arrested because she didn't have a drivers license. She said she was a sovereign citizen, and didn't need a drivers license.

I immediately had to find out what the heck that was. So I did some research, and it blew me away.

Apparently, there are thousands of folks in America who have declared themselves as "sovereign citizens", which means...

...a member of a political movement of people who oppose taxation, question the legitimacy of government, and believe that they are not subject to the law. – Oxford Dictionary.

I came across a YouTube video explaining what a sovereign citizen is, following a shooting incident.

Rachel Goldwasser is a research analyst at the Southern Poverty Law Center. She says,

Sovereign citizens believed that have separated themselves from America and as a result, do not need to follow U.S. law.

Rachel goes on to say that these folks do not pay taxes, have car registrations, or obtain insurances. They also do not get licenses of any kind.

She goes on to say that even though they declare themselves "outside of the law," anyone involved in the American Sovereign Citizen Movement is still looked at as American citizens under the United States Government, and mandated to still have to pay their taxes. The number is increasing, and law enforcement members are most at risk when dealing with sovereign citizens.

Are there sovereign citizens in Maine?

Yes, there are sovereign citizens in Maine. These folks believe they are not bound by government laws, and reject federal, state, and local law and authority.

The FBI considers the movement as a domestic threat, because some members commit illegal acts like fraud and violence.

If you are a sovereign citizen in Maine, what does this movement mean to you? Let us know.
