Just over an hour from Augusta, in Cape Elizabeth, is Fort Williams Park and the Portland Head Light! If you have kids of basically any age, this is a trip that needs to be on your Summer 2017 bucket list.
According to Wikipedia, named for Brevet Major Seth Williams, Fort Williams guarded Portland from 1872 to 1964. After its closing in 1964, it was sold to Cape Elizabeth. After entertaining several proposals, the Cape Elizabeth town council decided it was best suited as a park. The park was designated Fort Williams Park in July of 1979
Attractions include: the Goddard Mansion, tennis courts, a basketball court, baseball diamond, hiking/walking trails, picnic tables and cookout facilities, a picnic shelter, a children's garden, and the Portland Head Light.
