The Town of South China Maine is Getting a Community Ice Rink
With winter in Maine getting closer, many communities around the state are preparing their outdoor community activities for the season. One town that's making a big change to their wintertime community offerings is China, Maine.
At a recent Selectboard meeting, town Selectmen approved a community ice rink for the town. The approval was unanimous. The town is planning to spend about $5,000 from an account designated for town recreation to build the rink. It will be a removable rink constructed from plastic boards and will take about 9,600 gallons of water to fill.
According to The Town Line newspaper, Chairman of the Recreation Committee, Martha Wentworth, has already began speaking with China Fire Chief, Richard Morse, in preparation to have the volunteer fire department fill the rink and then go back and flood it again if and when the ice begins to get rough from use.
The community ice rink will be constructed at China Middle School in the South ball field where lights will make it conducive for night skating. Though Wentworth said her vision is more for family daytime use, she sees the possibility of a once-a-week night skate either on Fridays or Saturdays.
In addition to family use, Wentworth also suggested a possible once-a-week designated time for people who would like to use the rink for hockey. There will also be winterized portable toilets and trash cans available for public use. Additionally, the town hopes to have local vendors on site selling refreshments to skaters.
