When Did the Umbrella Cover Museum Open in Maine?
According to the museum’s website, The Umbrella Cover Museum is a tiny, delightfully odd museum founded in 1996 by Nancy Hoffman. What started as a practical solution for five or six extra umbrella covers quickly grew into something unexpected. Nancy didn’t know what to do with her extra covers, so she decided to open a museum.
The museum’s website states that visitors came by to see it and were excited to donate their old umbrella sheaths. Soon, the international press caught wind of the story.
What Nancy never imagined was how her simple idea would resonate with people around the world who also had too many umbrella covers.
Her collection eventually earned a Guinness World Record.
In 2012, according to Guinness World Records, Nancy held the record for the largest collection of umbrella covers in one place, with 730 covers. Today, the museum boasts over 2,000 covers from more than 70 countries.
The record specifically recognizes the most umbrella sleeves or covers collected by a single person in one location.
What makes this museum truly special is that it elevates something so ordinary into something extraordinary. Umbrella covers are everyday objects that people rarely give a second thought, yet here they inspire curiosity, delight, and even international attention. Visitors to Peaks Island often find themselves sending Nancy their own covers from across the globe, making this little Maine museum surprisingly worldly.

Children especially love visiting, drawn not only to the colorful displays but also to Nancy herself. Often singing, playing the accordion, or encouraging visitors to participate in her lively demonstrations, she ensures that everyone leaves with a smile.
On a tiny Maine island, a room full of forgotten objects transforms into a place of wonder, a must-see destination upon arrival. It’s a reminder that magic can be found in the most unexpected places, and that sometimes, the simplest things can spark the biggest smiles.
Add this to your list of must-sees when visiting Maine. I was born and raised here in Maine, and this is my first time hearing of the Umbrella Museum. Definitely going to check it out next summer!
