This all may be ShadowDog's idea of a good time, but not for most of us. A winter storm spanning 20 states dumped more than a foot of snow in some places yesterday. In fact about 60 million people, about  20% of the U.S. population, were under winter weather warnings.

There is a positive spin on this winter storm. It will help in some ways. Parts of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas have been facing drought conditions and when this snow melts that will be 1 to 2 inches of water for those regions. A winter storm system even left a rare thin layer of snow across the deserts of Arizona, New Mexico and southern California as far south as the border with Mexico.

However, it’s not just snow issues. Severe thunderstorms moving in from the Gulf of Mexico are expected to bring 2 to 6 inches of rain to New Orleans and parts of Alabama Wednesday as well as some tornado concerns.
