West Gardiner Teen Becomes Maine’s First Female Eagle Scout
Mia Dawbin should be an inspiration for all girls and young women who love Maine's great outdoors.
According to the KJ, earlier this year Dawbin, a resident of West Gardiner, became the first girl in Maine to reach the rank of Eagle Scout - the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America.
Making the accomplishment that much more amazing is the fact that she was able to complete the program in such a short time - it only opened to females two years ago.
One of Dawbin's major community projects was to help the homeless. As the pandemic progresses, she know homelessness was going to become a major issue. In order to raise money, she put on a bake sale and an online art auction. The money raised went to purchase care packages that included face masks / face coverings, soap, hand sanitizer, razors, shaving cream, tampons, socks, snacks, notebooks, crayons, and toys and games
Dawbin's Troop Leader, Danielle Hileman said of her:
We are very proud of her. She is a trailblazer, role model and mentor to girls in Troop 1776. She has shown daily what it means to live the Scout Law and oath in her daily life and community involvement.
Being an Eagle Scout runs in the family. Her father, Butch Dawbin, also attained the rank of Eagle Scout.
So far, 1,000 girls have attained the rank of Eagle Scout.
