This Historic Maine Drug Store Closes After Nearly 110 Years

A spot that Mainers have passed by for almost 110 years, whether by horse and buggy or car, recently announced they will be closing their doors for good.

Wilson’s Drug Store has been a fixture in Bath, Maine for over a century, serving the community, and is now shutting down.

Many long-term customers are perplexed and sadden by this announcement.

According to News Center Maine, the announcement came from Owner John Desjardins. He shared the news through signs that he posted on the store's windows.

Who is Wilson’s being sold to?

Desjardins, who has been running this store now for over 55 years, let everyone know that the pharmacy will be sold to Walgreens, according to News Center Maine.

If you are a customer, you have until March 25th, to pick up prescriptions and starting March 26th, all prescriptions that weren’t picked up will be transferred to the new location, as per the article.

Maryellen Spear, longtime employee of Wilson's wrote a heartfelt note on Facebook. to the community saying in part, "Wilson’s Pharmacy, my home when I’m not home, is closing."

Why is Wilson’s closing?

As per the report, this decision was not taken lightly. Desjardins had a dream of owning this store since he was 14 years old but the healthcare system is hard to navigate, especially with Medicare and Medicaid cuts.

Desjardins remarked,

“The healthcare climate is not conducive to small operations,”

Customers are feeling the hit too with one man saying,

“There’s so much change, especially with Medicare and the whole healthcare system.”

Desjardins is planning on selling the rest of the items in the store throughout the coming months. The community will most certainly feel the loss of this historic fixture in Bath, Maine.
