A serious crash in Winthrop Wednesday morning has left a young motorcyclist in critical condition.

According to the Winthrop Police Department, the crash happened around 9:30 a.m. on Route 133, near the intersection of Pamela Drive. Investigators say a Jeep Cherokee, driven by a 60-year-old woman from Readfield, was attempting to make a left-hand turn when it pulled into the path of an oncoming motorcycle.

WGME reported that the motorcyclist, a 28-year-old man, also from Readfield, was unable to avoid the collision and was thrown from the bike. He was rushed to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and later flown by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he remains in critical condition as of the latest update.

The news station went on to explain that the crash is still under investigation, and so far, no charges have been filed.

This serves as a sobering reminder to all drivers: with summer in full swing, motorcycles are everywhere. They’re harder to see, and riders don’t have the protection that comes with being inside a vehicle. Please take that extra second at intersections and double-check your blind spots. That moment of awareness can save a life.

We’re keeping the rider and his family in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time. If any updates become available, we’ll share them here.
