Once-in-a-Lifetime Discovery: Yellow Lobster Pulled from Maine Waters
There is something so cool about seeing what new and rare sea life has been pulled from Maine waters and this weekend something truly awesome was discovered off the coast of Bristol, Maine!
According to News Center Maine, a super rare yellow lobster was found! This neat find left fishermen and marine folks in total awe.
The lobster was pulled up on shore by Max Moody, a local fisherman, as per the article. He discovered the lobster trapped in one of his lobster traps. The then took it to the Pemaquid Fisherman’s Wharf.

Lobsters are often seen in a many different colors, including blue, orange, and even calico, a yellow lobster is like a once-in-a-lifetime discovery.
According to the New England Aquarium, the odds of catching such a rare yellow lobster are an astonishing one in 30 million. This makes Moody’s catch an exceptionally rare and valuable find in the world of marine biology.
Did you know that you have a better chance of finding a four-leaf clover than a yellow lobster! As per Wikipedia, the odds of finding a four-leaf clover are about 1 in 5,000, much more likely compared to the 1 in 30 million chance of finding a yellow lobster.
The lobster was immediately brought to the University of Maine's Darling Marine Center in Walpole. It will now be studied for its unique characteristics and be carefully cared for.
Experts are excited to learn more about what causes its unusual yellow shell and how it might differ from the more common lobsters found along the Maine coast.
According to Savebay, the reason why lobsters are rare colored is because "at some point in the construction of the DNA that sets their pigmentation, something goes wrong in the DNA coding."
This bright find also shows how incredible our Maine biodiversity is!
The lobster’s stay at the Darling Marine Center marks the beginning of what could be a fascinating journey of discovery, all thanks to one rare lobster and a fisherman who happened upon it in his trap.
