Red Barn’s Laura Benedict Talks with the Moose Morning Show About a Trying Weekend [Audio]

Laura Benedict, owner of Augusta's popular Red Barn Restaurant, had quite a weekend. Last Wednesday, the day preparations were being made to serve hundreds at the restaurant for Thursday's community Thanksgiving dinner, she received a "cease and desist" letter telling her to stop her charitable work immediately. Listen to her story:

Several people, including organizer Cheryl Clukey, went into a pool of frigid water, along Cony Street next to Old Fort Western, yesterday, to raise money to continue funding Bicentennial Nature Park on Three Cornered Pond, a property owned by the city...

Abuse: It May Happen Only Once, But it’s Reverberations Will Last a Lifetime

I had never written a story about domestic violence. I'd talked about it plenty on the radio but never actually took the initiative to bring the subject up on my own accord. Suddenly, a week or two ago, that all changed after two horrific stories surfaced, both of which involved men murdering the women they were suppose to love. Here's the scoop, in her own words (with Pastor Blackstone).

No More Abuse! Jon’s Christmas Wish for Women in Distress

When I finally got fed up with news of local women dying at the hands of men in their lives, I had to speak out on the radio...not only to share my dismay and sadness, but also to offer women who might be in that type of situation some kind of warning. I've been pleasantly surprised by the response...

Some More Sound Advice for Women That Can Keep You Safe (A True Story of Abuse)

Yesterday, I went off on this spiel about how saddened I am to see women's lives ruined by the, so called, "men" they love. I felt compelled after two recent, senseless, murders of young women by, not men, but animals. I got some hopeful comments that let me know my advice was on target. I also got something I didn't expect. A letter from a woman in central Maine corroborating what I was saying. With her permission, I'm posting the letter here. It is my hope that it will help affirm the way these relationships typically play out. Maybe, armed with knowledge from advice and experience, you'll be able to run before it's too late. Maybe this woman's heartfelt letter will help you think more with your brain and less with your heart...
