This weekend is the State of Maine Sportsman Show at the Augusta Civic Center.  Among the booths will be one for ‘Becoming an Outdoors Woman in Maine’.  Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) is about women learning about and becoming comfortable with outdoorsy stuff. (and it is FUN!)

The Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program in Maine is co-sponsored by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife and the Friends of Maine BOW. Becoming an Outdoors-Woman means becoming more competent, more confident and more aware! (and it’s FUN!)  The workshops teach you more about the outdoors and themselves, at your own comfort level. The instructors are women and men who understand what they are teaching and great teachers of these skills.

A bit of history, the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program began in 1991, when it was first offered through the University of Wisconsin.  It started after a professor figured out that women preferred to learn hunting, fishing and outdoor skills in a non-competitive atmosphere along with other like-minded women.

If you are at the State of Maine Sportsman Show at the Augusta Civic Center on Saturday March 29, 2014 at noon time, come join Emily MacCabe the BOW Coordinator for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. The BOW presentation will happen in the Aroostook Room!

I did the Introductory Skills Weekend in September of 2013. It was amazing! Yes, I was a little scared driving there, all by myself, but I did it and I LOVED it. (and it’s FUN!) Once you get there, you work and play at your comfort level. I never went to summer camp as a kid, so this more than made up for it. It is also the perfect 'girls-weekend' for something fun and unique to do with your gal-pals. I picked a number of the survivalist skills and fly tying. Because of what I learned, when I hike in the woods, I have more confidence and see so much of what nature has to offer us. As for the fly tying, well, I don’t fly fish (yet) but fly-tying is fun!
