An estimated 1,800 gallons of fuel spilled last week after a plow truck backed into a gasoline pump at Christy's Country Store in Belgrade last week during the storm.

As reported by Centralmaine.com, David Madore, director of communications for the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, says over 200 cubic yards of contaminated snow and soil had to be removed from the area. He went on to say that three wells in the area are being tested for contamination as well. The wells belong to Christy’s store; the former Town Office across the street; and a small business about 500 feet away from the store.

According to Centralmaine.com, the DEP was notified of the spill early March 14 and the incident was investigated by the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office. In the story they said Travis Willet, 35, of Vassalboro was plowing in the area when he backed into the gas pump knocking it over, according to Chief Deputy Al Morin. Morin went on to say Deputy William Kulakowski was called to the scene at 4:07 a.m. Wednesday, estimated there was $12,000 in damages with an additional $5,152 worth of lost gasoline.
