14-Year-Old Shot in Lewiston, Police Recover Three Guns
A 14-year-old boy is expected to recover after being shot in Lewiston Thursday afternoon, according to police.
Lewiston Police say officers responded to 4 Avon Street just after 4:30 p.m. following reports of screaming and multiple gunshots in the area. Witnesses told investigators they saw several teenagers running away from the scene shortly after the shots were fired.
WGME is reporting that when officers arrived, they found a 14-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. The teen was taken to Central Maine Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition Thursday evening.
As the investigation unfolded, police say several teenagers were detained for questioning. Investigators also recovered three guns connected to the incident. Authorities have not yet released details about what led up to the shooting or whether any charges are expected.
The incident comes amid growing concern over youth violence in Lewiston. Following the shooting, Lewiston Mayor Carl Sheline released a statement calling the recent violence involving teens in the city “unacceptable and untenable.”
“We need to continue to work with at-risk youth and also provide support and resources for parents,” Sheline said. “These kids should be shooting hoops, not shooting each other.”
WGME reported that police say the investigation remains active and are asking anyone with additional information about the shooting to contact the Lewiston Police Department.
