Dramatic Rescue: 6 Hikers Safely Brought Down from Mount Katahdin

Six hikers were successfully rescued after spending 21 hours on Katahdin over the weekend in Millinocket, according to WGME. 

The hikers were battling bad weather conditions, dropping temps, and wind gusts up to 30 MPH, the news station reported.

This mission was seriously dangerous and involved several rescue teams.

On the scene were two Baxter State Park rangers and three North Search and Rescue members, according to WGME. They began their climb toward the lost hikers at 10 p.m. Saturday, the news station said, but because of the terrible weather, they decided they had to shelter in place at 2:00 a.m.

A Maine National Guard helicopter was able to evacuate one hiker just before 8:00 a.m., the news station reported.

WGME stated that the remaining five hikers were helped down over the course of 11 hours by rescue teams, and thankfully, all six hikers were eventually reunited with their families.

Baxter State Park has over 200 miles of trails and 16 percent of those are on Katahdin, according to the state park's website, so it's a massively large wild country and dangers are everywhere.

The smallest thing could lead you to becoming lost or injured.
