86 Year Old Mainer to Run Corporal Cole Memorial 5K on Birthday
Ever since the terrible killing of Somerset County's Corporal Eugene Cole, there has been a Corporal Cole Memorial Run that seeks to raise money for a scholarship in the name of the late Corporal Cole.
This year, for obvious reasons, things are going to be just a little bit different. While organizers won't be able to host the same large gathering and run that they have in the past, they have made it much easier to participate virtually- and there's still time to sign up! Registration is down significantly this year due to COVID-19, and we're aiming to change that. For just $25 you can register to run 'virtually' this year. Registration closes at noontime on Sunday, August 23rd.
In addition to being able to help raise money virtually, it gets even more special this year. There will still be a very small team that completes the physical race as scheduled including Corporal Cole's wife Sheryl Cole and Norridgewock resident Bruce Farrin. This year, the race falls on Farrin's 87th birthday and will be his 3rd trip around the 5K course.
If you were thinking of registering this year, but weren't quite sure, here's some words of encouragement from the Corporal Cole Memorial Run Facebook page,
This race started because of the power of one. The power of the kindness of Corporal Eugene Cole. The race continues because of the power of one; the one who registered because they knew Corporal Cole, the one who registered because they didn't know Corporal Cole. The power of one 86 year old Norridgewock resident, Bruce Farrin, who will run his 3rd consecutive Corporal Cole 5k on Sunday, which is Mighty Farrin's 86th Birthday.
So whether you want to run, walk, donate or just hit the 'share' button to spread the word, do your part to help out this great local cause and support the memory of an amazing Maine law enforcement officer who lost his life on the job and left behind an incredible community.
