Ancient Cistern Found Underneath The Ground in Lewiston, Maine

There is something, hiding in plain sight, right underneath our feet in Lewiston, Maine.

An old brick cistern has circulated and brought about curiosity after photos were noticed online.

This was discovered last year and it's a structure that takes your breath away with ancient magic.

It is still intact, which is surprising. The brickwork is all there and judging by it's design, this thing has got to be over 200 years old.

According to an article put out by the Sun Journal, this cistern could hold up to 40,000 gallons of water.

What the heck is a Cistern?

Cisterns were used to collect rainwater back in the day from the tops of roofs through gutters, pretty much natures version of a water tank.

As per the article, in the mid-1800s the amount of people in Lewiston was rapidly growing and wooden houses were built very close together.

Because of the closeness of the homes, this raised fire risks and to help prevent that from happening, insurance companies had cities create ways to store water, like with under ground cisterns, as the Sun Journal reported.

Finding a cistern is like finding a hidden treasure.

Many locals flooded the comments with nostalgia, and questions. “Is this open to the public?” asked one. “I’ve lived here my whole life and never knew this existed,” said another.

The location is somewhere near the corner of Spring and Whipple and has become a mini-mystery. Some have journeyed to look for the cistern themselves!

In a world where things move so super fast, it’s really fun to find a relic that’s stood the test of time.
