New Affordable Apartments for Families Opening Soon in Maine
A long-awaited affordable housing development focused on families is nearly ready to open in Biddeford.
According to WGME, after about five years of planning and construction, the Biddeford Housing Authority is preparing to welcome residents into a new 39-unit complex on the upper end of Adams Street. The four-story building will offer two, three, and four bedroom apartments, with an emphasis on creating options for families who are often overlooked in traditional multi-family housing projects.
Executive Director Guy Gagnon says the goal has always been to support working families who want to live close to downtown.
The news station reported that the location allows residents to walk to nearby jobs, stores, and services without needing a car. That kind of convenience can be difficult to find, especially for larger households looking for affordable space.
The project also includes a partnership with Caring Unlimited, a domestic violence resource center serving York County. Eight of the 39 units will be reserved for survivors of domestic violence and their children.
Housing officials say many families experiencing homelessness are fleeing unsafe domestic situations. Providing stable housing is a critical first step toward long-term security and independence.
Funding for the development was made possible through Maine State Housing using the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program, the news station explained.
If construction continues on schedule, officials hope families will be able to move into the new apartments as early as next month.
