Central Maine Man Creates Inclusive Art For Mainers
I recently created a story on how I did not see much same-sex representation within the greeting card section at my local grocery store and I was happy to receive a message from a fellow Mainer about this.
Meet, Michael Taylor of Monmouth. He grew up in West Gardiner/Gardiner area and he currently lives in his family's camp on Tacoma Lakes.
He previously worked as a hairstylist in Portland for 17 years but as a child he dreamt of working in illustration and animation but never pursued either, until now.
In 2012, he took a graphic design class while still working in the beauty/hair industry. But then stopped again while he opened his own salon. He ran his salon for a few years and then yearned to revisit graphic design and animation in 2017.
In 2020, Michael decided to jump in with both feet and create delicious art!
I was working on developing his niche, originally thinking I would get into illustrating children's/picture books but my growing audience has led me to work on projects branding small businesses that happen to be owned and operated by LGBTQ members of the community.
Michael is currently working on private cartoon portrait commissions for clients. His business is called, Hey Guncle!
It is evident that Michael strives to create and show love and inclusion to those who aren't represented.
I’m currently living the career I dreamt of having when I was a kid, and I’m loving every moment.
Michael has plans to write and illustrate his own books and comics in the coming months, while expanding on his product offerings I sell online.
You can check out Michaels incredible art and creations on his Hey Guncle website, Instagram, or his Etsy page!
