Crews Battle Augusta Fire as Flames Spread From Barn to House
A fire in Augusta destroyed a barn and caused damage to a nearby home Monday morning.
If you were like me and on the road in Augusta around mid-morning yesterday, you also probably either noticed the sounds of screeching sirens coming from what seemed like all directions, or you definitely noticed the billowing black smoke off in the distance.
WGME is reporting that crews were called to the scene near Church Hill Road, where the fire is believed to have started in an attached barn before spreading to the house, according to the Augusta fire chief.
Firefighters worked to contain the flames as they moved from the barn into the home. Despite the damage, officials say no one was hurt in the incident.
Because of the elevated fire risk in the area, additional resources were brought in to help prevent the situation from getting worse. The Maine Forest Rangers assisted by using a helicopter to drop water on nearby grass that had caught fire. Crews also used aerial water drops to help knock down flames on the structure itself.
According to WGME 13, Firefighters remained on scene working to fully extinguish hot spots and prevent any flare-ups.
The cause of the fire has not yet been released.
