Did you know that Father’s Day is 110 years old this year? Yep. Found that out from the same place I find out all the cool stuff I find....Farmers’ Almanac. That is the one with the orange and green cover and comes from Lewiston Maine.  And speaking of Maine there a Maine connection to this story.

According to the Farmer’s Almanac…Father’s (and Mother’s) Day were created to honor the people who take on this important job. There has been a Father’s Day of sorts prior to 1910 but it did not turn into an annual thing. It was in 1910 in Washington State that a group of women wanted to make this a yearly event. And they did.  Then in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson helped them to celebrate it and then worked to have it made a national holiday. President Wilson had done the same for Mother’s Day in 1915. Like everything there were some bumps along the way.

Senator Margaret Chase-Smith, who is from Skowhegan, spoke up when this hit a snag in congress and said that both parents need to be honored. But in the 60’s and 70’s things were still in the works and in 1972 President Nixon made Father’s Day official on the third Sunday in June.

So there you go. Do you feel smarter? I sure do.
