Here’s What is Likely to go into The Former Skowhegan, Maine Drive-In Site
The Skowhegan Drive-In closed on September 23, 2023. The drive-in, which had been in operation for 70 years since its opening in 1953, showed its final films on that date, the Kennebec Journal reported.
Since last fall, the longtime outdoor theater has sat vacant just waiting for new life to be breathed in to the property. And now, it looks like that finally may be happening.
According to an article published by the Kennebec Journal, the town of Skowhegan's planning board met on Tuesday to discuss a proposal that would allow for the construction of a 32-lot mobile home park on the property.
The proposal for the mobile home park, which would encompass the property's 11.23 acres, was submitted by A&L Properties, a Skowhegan based developer.
Randy Butler, of Fairfield-based Dirigo Engineering, representing A&L Properties Inc, told the Kennebec Journal in part,
“They’re in a purchase and sale agreement for the Skowhegan Drive-In and movie theater and so forth and trying to develop that into a mobile home park. The target is 30 to 40 lots.”
Jeff McCabe, a board member, said in part about the proposed project,
"This is a pretty important link in Skowhegan to have this additional housing. You know, you see 32 lots, and obviously I’m excited to see it and make sure that we can make this as feasible as possible. And also address the stormwater.”
If the proposal is approved and moves ahead, it could lead to more affordable housing for the region. Currently there is no proposed timeline for the project, though we will keep this post updated as more information becomes available in regards to the potential new mobile home park.
