Maine Gov. Paul LePage has presented a $6.3 billion budget. It proposes cutting income taxes and eliminating the estate tax. The budget outlines partially paying for both measures with a broader and higher sales tax.

There are also significant changes to the welfare reimbursement formula. That could mean the loss of millions of dollars for a number of communities

The budget will also reduce the top income tax rate from 7.95 percent to 5.75 percent and increase the sales tax from 5.75 percent to 6.5 percent. There would be a phase out revenue sharing to cities and towns, for a total reduction of $164 million and allow cities and towns to tax nonprofit organization properties worth more than $500,000.
