An article written by The Portland Press Herald reported that Democrat Janet Mills is leading ex-governor Republican, Paul LePage in the raising of campaign funds.

Mills has reportedly raised over $1.6 million dollars and LePage is at $900,000 for funds.

You may be asking why campaign fundraising is important for an election. Well, the answer is, everything costs money and money is necessary.

Their are so many expenditures that go into campaigns that need to be covered; travel expenses, hotels, food, covering expenses for candidates, staff, consultants, marketing, advertising, and so much more.

So, if you are having a difficult time raising money for your campaign you may not be able to buy television ads, marketing supplies, signage, really anything to promote your run for that specific election.

And where do they get the money you ask? Great question! Donors. Rich donors or private rich donors, either way, they are rich people. There has always been speculation that if a big company donates money to a runner, they want special favors in return but while that may be a speculation, their are regulations put in place to prevent this.

The process of raising money for a campaign is called, Campaign Finance, which according to Britannica, is "raising and spending of money intended to influence a political vote, such as the election of a candidate or a referendum."

Janet Mills has raised more then Paul LePage but that does not mean she will win. This always does not mean he will win. It merely means, she has more money and can maintain more expenditures while on her campaign. It certainly helps but it isn't the end-all-be-all if you don't have a lot of money for your campaign.

Mills and LePage are competitors, rivals, and on two different sides of the party. In my non-political opinion, they should buddy up, work together, use both of their influence and talent to promote a more healthier and bonded state of Maine.

Pipe dream? You never know what could happen. Good luck to both candidates.
