A tragic fire in Franklin County has left a family grieving the loss of their beloved pets. Authorities say at least 11 dogs and four cats died when flames tore through a home on Mile Square Road in Avon.

According to WGME 13, Phillips Fire Chief James Gould said firefighters faced significant challenges just getting to the scene. The home was located about a quarter-mile up a narrow, tree-covered driveway, making it difficult for emergency crews to find and access the property. Gould estimated it took roughly 45 minutes before they were able to reach the house.

By the time firefighters arrived, the residence was already engulfed. The owners were not at home when the fire broke out. Neighbors reportedly called in the blaze after noticing smoke in the area, the news station reported.

Investigators from the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office were called to examine the scene, but the extent of the destruction made it impossible to determine what sparked the fire. "The damage was just too severe to pinpoint a cause," officials said.

Along with the loss of the house, the family’s pets, which included11 dogs and four cats, were unable to escape, a devastating blow to the owners and the community.

WGME explained that crews from several nearby departments assisted at the scene, reflecting the rural challenges of fighting fires in remote parts of Maine. Firefighters remained on site for several hours to extinguish hot spots and ensure the fire was fully under control.

No people were injured, but officials describe the loss of the animals as heartbreaking. Local residents have already begun to offer support to the family as they face both the emotional toll and the practical challenges of rebuilding after such a catastrophic fire.
