Police Chase in Stolen Truck Spans Multiple Maine Towns
A Benton man is facing a long list of charges after police say he led officers on a dangerous chase through multiple central Maine communities in a stolen pickup truck Tuesday morning.
According to police, officers received a report around 8:20 a.m. that a stolen GMC Sierra had been spotted near Mill Street in Fairfield. When officers located the truck and attempted a stop, investigators say the driver sped off instead.
According to WGME, police identified the suspect as 30-year-old Christopher Groves of Benton. Authorities say the pursuit continued through Waterville and onto Interstate 95, where Groves allegedly crossed the median and drove the wrong way on the highway before eventually turning around. Officers later lost sight of the truck.
The vehicle was eventually located abandoned in Clinton. Witnesses told police Groves had run into a home on Canaan Road before fleeing out the back door. Officers later tracked him down and took him into custody.
Groves now faces multiple charges, including eluding an officer, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, driving to endanger, criminal speed, aggravated criminal mischief, and violating conditions of release. He was transported to the Somerset County Jail following his arrest, the news station reported.
