Massive Softball Tournament to Benefit Lewiston Shooting Victims Returns
Lewiston, Maine, is gearing up for a heartwarming event as the Maine Strong Memorial Foundation hosts its second softball tournament.
The first year was massive with over 40 softball teams playing in tribute and to benefit the victims of the Lewiston Mass shooting.
I was lucky enough to speak to Derek Haskell, and he told me this year’s tournament promises not only thrilling games but also a powerful reminder of the foundation’s mission. The foundation's relentless effort to honor and support those affected by the shooting is prominent and so beautiful.
The tourney runs two days October 12 and 13th from 7 am - 5 pm.
There have been 48 teams signed to play the tourneys this year on two separate fields because of the massive amount of people participating Ron Morin Memorial Fields (formerly Randall Road) located at 381 Randall Rd, Lewiston. Also playing at the Joe Walker Memorial Field & Tricia Asselin Memorial Field (formerly Pettengill Park) located at 48 Pettengill Park Rd. Auburn.
The Maine Strong Memorial Foundation was established in memory of those who lost their lives in the mass shooting.
It was founded by a dedicated group of families and friends made up of Abigail Cote (President), Stephanie Libby (VP), Chase Cote (Fundraising Chair), Dan LaBrie (Operations Co-Chair), Nick Abel (Operations Co-Chair), Robert Blaisdell (Finance Chair), Derek Haskell (Gameplay Chair), Bethanny Hammond (Marketing Co-Chair), Kat Blessis-Poto (Marketing Co-Chair).
As the Maine Strong Memorial Foundation continues to grow, so does its impact on the community. In its first year, it raised just over $207,000. This year, they are aiming to raise $350,000.
