Even though Maine’s aggravated assaults and drug crimes are higher, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety the crime rate in Maine has fallen by 9.1%! This is the largest drop in the state's crime rate in about two decades.

The crime with the biggest decline is arson, which fell by 38%. The overall crime rate in Maine is at 24.3 for every 1000 people which is about six percentage points under the national average.
