Did You Know This Maine Theater is the Oldest in the U.S.?
Madison is a charming town in Maine. And it's also where you'll find the Lakewood Theater. Established in 1901, it holds the distinction of being the oldest theater in the United States, as per their site.
It is an absolute gem, and the perfect backdrop for the groundbreaking musical currently playing, The Prom.
Can you imagine people attending this theater back in the early 1900s with their top hats and tails? Those walls have witnessed talented actors for generations, and now, it's putting on a play based on a true story!
The Prom is based on four colorful Broadway stars who need a new stage, so when they hear about a controversy over a small-town prom, they decide to put a spotlight on the issue.
This play is so good that it was turned into a film, featuring stars like Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, and Andrew Rannells. Below is the YouTube trailer.
The town's parents want a traditional, straight dance, but one student wishes to bring her girlfriend. This sparks a fabulous alliance between the stars and girls as they join forces, leading to a story of love and unity.
I was lucky enough to chat with Gina Lee Davis, one of the organizers. She told me they are in the second week of this show, and have performances this Friday and Saturday @ 8pm.
So Lakewood is not just historic for its age, but also its inclusivity! What a great way to celebrate Pride Month at this incredibly notable spot in Madison.
