Make Sure to Get Ready for Maine Snow Fleas
I was today years old when I learned about what snow fleas are. They are really a thing. If you are like me, and don't have an extensive library of bug knowledge in your own brain, then we will learn about this together.
Obviously we all know what a flea is. When I think of this insect, dogs come to mind. I also didn't realize that there were "seasonal" fleas.
.."snowfleas" are of consist color when swarming. The two that we encounter most often are the typical and more common snowflea. Their swarms can literally blanket the surface of the snow. They may also become abundant on the ground during prolonged rainy spells in the spring or fall.
Okay, so I get it now. They are snow fleas because they, "blanket the snow." Ew.
Are they harmful? Let's find out. Go grab a coffee or snack and I'll be right back.
Okay babes, guess what I uncovered? Snow fleas are not even fleas!
Snow fleas are not actually fleas. And, unlike the fleas you typically find on your pets, snow fleas do not bite. The insects are harmless to both humans and pets.
Although they don’t bite, they may become a nuisance if they’re in your home in large numbers.
I am relieved to find out that these little seasonal creatures do not bite. Just make sure that they don't build a life of their own with thousands of little babies in your home. That is what would make them frustrating.
So when our beautiful Maine snow falls, please know that snow fleas do in fact exist. They will not harm you, but if you see a blanket of these bugs on the snow, you will most certainly get a blanket of goosebumps on your body.
