According to the KJ, a Madison man is in trouble after a Skowhegan car accident in which he was allegedly driving his vehicle from the passenger seat.

At approximately 11:30 on Monday night a Skowhegan PD officer was conducting traffic enforcement on Waterville Road.  The officer attempted to stop a van with its tail lights out.  Instead of stopping, the driver accelerated down Walnut street and turned into the New Balance parking lot.  According to the officer, the only person in the vehicle was a man in the passenger seat, holding the wheel with his left hand, waving with his right.

The van continued forward, hitting the police cruiser.

The van's occupant has been identified as 62 year old Rex Hinerman, of Madison.

Hinerman claims the van had been driven by a man, whom he did not know, and that man had jumped out of the vehicle and ran off.  A police dog determined Hinerman was the only occupant of the van.

Additionally, Hinerman allegedly had two different plates on the van and was found in possession of drugs.

Hinerman was charged with unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, attaching false plates, operating under the influence and operating after revocation.
