A man is being treated for life-threatening injuries after being struck by a freight train in Lewiston late Thursday morning.

According to officials, first responders were called to the railroad tracks near Whipple Street around 10:42 a.m. Lewiston Fire Chief Mark Caron confirmed the man had been hit by a CSX freight train in the area of Riverside Street.

According to WMTW, when crews arrived, they found the man trapped underneath a railroad car. Emergency responders were able to free him before transporting him to Central Maine Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Police have not released the man’s name.

Authorities say the train was traveling south toward Auburn at the time of the incident. Investigators with the Railroad Authority are now leading the investigation.

The train also blocked crossings on Libby Avenue and Strawberry Avenue for nearly two hours, prompting officials to ask drivers to find alternate routes. The train began moving again shortly after 12:30 p.m., according to video from the scene.
