Today is 'National Manufacturing Day'. It is an industry that is dwindling in this country and has been for many years because of cheap labor overseas and other factors, but all is not lost.

I hear stories frequently about the the old textile mills and shoe shops in Lewiston/Auburn area. From Bates, to Acorn and Etonic, not to mention all the other leftover mills in the area.

It really is too bad about the textile and paper mills, but we do still make stuff. Tambrands is right here in Auburn, Pioneer Plastics plans to add jobs, Westbrook and South Portland still have robust manufacturing outlets.

I worked for two years making car parts in a plant on Congress St. in Portland before I too the job at 92 Moose some 14+ years ago.

I know times seem tough but there are good jobs but you have to be willing to work overnights and maybe even move or commute longer distances.

Don't lose hope if you're looking for work.
