Oops! Watch Out For Maine Critters When Driving at Night
This photo of the bottom of my wife's Jeep Cherokee should serve as a gentle reminder to be extra vigilant and aware of your surroundings when driving on Maine roads this summer.
To be fair, you can mow down animals at any time of the year here in the Pine Tree State, but summertime always seems to be when there are more animals than ever in the roadway. Maybe it's because of the longer than average days or because it's just nice out and they want to go for a walk.
Now, to be fair, as I've said on the Moose Morning Show I will NOT swerve for an animal that isn't going to cause my bodily harm if hit it. I'm not risking driving off into the trees (within reason) to avoid hitting a racoon (or porcupine).
Last month while driving home from Augusta, I was coming around a dark corner on a backroad in Windsor. While going about 40 MPH I came around a blind corner to see a fat old porcupine walking down the road in the middle of my lane. I could have swerved and risked driving off the road, but I didn't. Instead I angled the car so that I drove directly over the back of it, hoping that I had enough ground clearance to not make contact.
Well, yesterday while I was in the garage rotating the tires on the car it became quite evident that I didn't quite make it. I probably pulled 300 quills out of the car when it was all said and done. I'm just hoping I didn't kill it. Anyway, watch out on the roads, my friends!
