Scammers Claiming to Be Jail Staff Target Maine Families
The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public to a new scam involving callers who are impersonating jail officials in an attempt to steal money from families of inmates.
According to the sheriff’s office, the scam begins with a phone call from someone claiming to be a jail representative. The caller tells family members that their loved one can be released immediately if a payment is made. Officials say this scheme closely resembles previous scams in which individuals pretended to be local law enforcement officers demanding money for alleged fines, warrants, or missed court dates.
According to News Center Maine, authorities stress that the jail will never contact anyone to request money in exchange for an inmate’s release. No such programs exist, and inmates cannot be transferred, released early, or placed into alternate programs by paying fees outside the official bail process.
The sheriff’s office warns that any request for payment through apps like Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, or through gift cards is a red flag. These methods are commonly used by scammers because they are difficult to trace, the news station reported.
Residents are encouraged to verify any suspicious communication by contacting the Penobscot County Jail or their local law enforcement agency directly using official phone numbers. Officials also remind the public to avoid sharing personal information, financial details, or account access with unknown callers.
If you believe you may have been targeted or have already sent money, News Center says you should immediately reach out to law enforcement to report the scam and seek further guidance.
