I came across what looks to be a new scam attacking members of a local credit union in Maine. It looks to be a text scam. A user recently posted a screenshot of a text message on the Lewiston Rocks Facebook page, warning others about a possible scam targeting Maine Family Federal Credit Union members..

It's important to note that this person, is not a member of this local Maine credit union.

The message claims that there's been "suspicious activity" on the bank account and urges you to log in.

The message says "Your account has been suspended due to unusual activity and a violation of our Term and Conditions."

Like most scams they are intended to look identical to the official MFFCU text messages, which can definitely throw you for a loop.

Because the moment I looked at the copy of the text, I immediately thought it was legitimate. They have the message looking pretty professional, all down to the logo, color scheme, and tone.

But notice the webpage it has directed you to. mainefamilyfcu.weebly.com. That is not MFFCU's website which is, mainefamilyfcu.com. Always make sure to note the webpage if you have mistakenly clicked on a link.

What's the goal of this?

Well, to trick you into clicking on a link that will lead you to a fake site that is going to give up your information and money.

How to avoid being scammed?

It's very important to remember that Maine Family Credit Union will never send unsolicited texts urging you to log into your account or give info that is very sensitive like that.

If you get a message, call them and refrain from clicking on any links.
