A 21-year-old Maine man was killed early Tuesday morning after his pickup truck crashed into a utility pole and rolled over in Whitefield, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say the crash happened at approximately 5:50 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Gardiner Road and Hunts Meadow Road. Authorities identified the driver as Gavin Martin of Edgecomb.

Investigators say Martin was driving a Chevy Colorado pickup truck when the vehicle left the roadway, struck a utility pole, and then rolled over, coming to rest on its roof. Emergency crews responded to the scene, but Martin was pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

According to WGME 13, Martin was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Officials say speed appears to have been a contributing factor, though the incident remains under investigation and no final determination has been made.

The crash occurred during the early morning hours, when traffic is typically light. Deputies have not said whether weather or road conditions played a role, the news station reported.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or saw the vehicle prior to the crash to come forward. Anyone with information is urged to contact the sheriff’s office at (207) 882-7332.

No additional details have been released at this time.
