Alfred, Maine Traffic Stop Uncovers Meth and Fentanyl
A Waterboro man is facing several charges after York County deputies say a routine traffic stop in Alfred led to the discovery of methamphetamine and fentanyl.
According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, deputies pulled over a vehicle on Sunday after noticing something suspicious about the registration plates. The plates attached to the vehicle reportedly belonged to an entirely different car, prompting deputies to investigate further.
During the stop, deputies identified the driver as 34-year-old Jeffrey Hodgkins of Waterboro. While speaking with Hodgkins, deputies conducted a search and say they found both methamphetamine and fentanyl in his possession. WGME reported that authorities did not release the exact quantities of drugs recovered, but both substances are classified as highly dangerous and illegal to possess under Maine law.
Hodgkins was immediately taken into custody and charged with unlawful possession of methamphetamine along with unlawful possession of fentanyl. Deputies say they also requested that the district attorney’s office seek an indictment for attaching false plates, a separate criminal offense.
The news station explained that following his arrest, Hodgkins was transported to the York County Jail, where officials set his bail at $5,060. As of the most recent update, the sheriff’s office has not provided additional details about the investigation or whether more charges may follow.
The York County Sheriff’s Office continues to emphasize that traffic stops—often for minor violations—frequently lead to significant criminal discoveries, including illegal drugs and outstanding warrants. Deputies have not said what initially led Hodgkins to use false plates, but the case remains under review by prosecutors.
