As a parent it's one of the worst things you could possibly imagine. Your young child falling through a section of thin ice into the frigid waters below. Well, for one set of Winslow parents, that's exactly what happened yesterday.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the 911 call came in at about 1 PM on Monday afternoon when reports of two adolescents falling through thin ice in the outlet stream in Vassalboro came in. Agencies, including the Vassalboro Fire Department responded to the scene. Upon their arrival they found that one of the victims, 13-year-old Gabriel Shorey, had already been able to get himself to shore and free himself from the water.

12-year-old Lanny Dellinger of Winslow was still stuck in the stream. According to reports Dellinger got hung up in some mud while trying to get out and was stuck clinging to a piece of ice to keep his head above water. Upon their arrival, Vassalboro fire officials were able to free the boy and pull him to safety.

According to Chief Thompson he believes the boy will be okay despite being transported to Maine General's Thayer Campus to be treated for hypothermia. Thank you to all responding agencies and especially to the Vassalboro Fire Department for showing true heroism and saving the young boy's life.
