Central Maine Power has issued a warning to customers about a phone scam. This one involves a caller posing as utility company employees and threatening to cut electricity services.

The scammer, just like other recently reported incidences, tells the customer that unless they make an immediate payment over the phone using a prepaid debit card, that their power will be turned off.

CMP tells WMTW that some customers are told that a recent payment was not received and a crew will come by and shut off power unless a payment is made immediately.

What is catching some customers off guard is that Caller ID may show up as the company. Also, callback numbers may have the same recorded greeting as CMP's.

If you have been targeted report it to CMP, local law enforcement and the Federal Trade Commission.
