I recently learned that when you go outside and it's cold, those temperature can raise your blood pressure which also constricts your coronary arteries according to USA Today. The cold temps and physical exertion could result in a coronary situation.

We are in the dead of winter currently in Maine. The temperatures are at it's lowest and so far the wind chill is brutal.

We as Mainers, are strong and have an immense work ethic so we push ourselves. I can't tell you how important it is to pace yourself and take breaks while shoveling.

Recently, in Sweden a 71 year old man was shoveling and had a heart attack. Fortunately the region he lived in partnered with a drone company that provides emergency drones in these types of situations. The drone delivered a defibrillator to the man and he was saved.

Unfortunately, Maine does not have these robot capabilities, so it is vital to your health and safety, to ask someone else for help, especially, if you have a prior physical illness or condition.

According to the same USA Today article, shoveling can be even more dangerous for middle aged people who are not used to exercising or physical activity. It's a good idea to ask or hire a younger and more fit person to assist you in your shoveling this winter.

As much as you say to yourself, "If I don't do it, no one will", it is not worth risking your health, so this winter when your thinking about going out to clear off the wet heavy snow from your driveway, think again and ask a friend, neighbor, or community member to help!

We are Mainers and the best part about this state is that we have this beautiful community bond and we are stronger together. There are always people waiting to help, all you have to do is ask!
