You Might Be Shocked By The Number of Moose That Live in Maine

As a rural state, it should surprise no one that Maine is known for its critters.

Our forests and coasts are loaded with everything from lobsters, to bears, to deer.  Of course, one of the most iconic Maine creatures is, without a doubt, that moose.

We have stores, desserts, and even radio stations named after the majestic (and massive) creatures.  Yes, here in Maine, we love our moose.

If you have spent much time driving the roads outside our bigger towns, there is a good chance that you have seen one at least once or twice.  In certain parts of the state, there is a good chance that you see them on a regular basis.  Hopefully, the ones you saw are not standing in the middle of the road when you encountered them.

How Many Moose Live in Maine?

According to the Maine.gov website, there are at least 40,000 moose living in Maine.  However, because it is hard to get an accurate count (because they live in the deep Maine woods), there is a chance that there could be as many as 60,000 moose in Maine!

That would be one moose for every 23 people living in Maine!

According to the website, the majority of moose live in Aroostook County or Western Maine.  However, there are limited numbers in Penobscot, Somerset, Hancock, and Franklin counties.  There are almost none in Southern Maine.

Here are some tips for remaining safe in places where moose live:

• Keep your distance—if wildlife notices you, you’re too close (use binoculars instead)
• Stay quiet and avoid sudden movements (yes, that car door slam counts)
• Never feed wildlife
• Give extra space during breeding seasons and when animals have young (moose: late Sept–early Oct)
• Leave no trace—pack out all trash and food
• Keep pets on a leash
• Be location-aware—tell someone your plans, park safely, and respect private land (always ask permission)
