Maine Warden Service Investigates Fatal Refueling Accident in Windham
A routine afternoon on Little Sebago Lake turned tragic Tuesday when a 78-year-old Windham man died in an accident while refueling his boat.
According to Authorities say the incident happened around 4:15 p.m. near Outlet Cove Road. Channel 13 said emergency crews were dispatched after receiving reports of a man floating face down in the water. When first responders arrived, they discovered the victim, identified as Allan Ryder, unresponsive in the lake.
According to WGME 13 and the Maine Warden Service, the preliminary investigation indicates Ryder had been refueling his boat at the dock when gasoline vapors ignited unexpectedly. The sudden flare caused him to either leap or fall into the water. Witnesses called for help immediately.
Windham Fire and Rescue personnel rushed to the scene and began providing medical assistance. Despite their efforts, Ryder could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene, the news station explained.
The Maine Warden Service is leading the investigation, working closely with the Windham Police Department, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the ignition and reviewing safety procedures.
Neighbors told WGME that the event was deeply unsettling for the typically quiet lakeside community, which is popular for boating, swimming and summer recreation. Many residents say the accident is a sobering reminder of the dangers that can arise during routine tasks like fueling a vessel.
Officials have not released further details about what might have triggered the ignition, but the investigation remains active. Authorities say additional information will be shared with the public as it becomes available.
