With Memorial Day weekend coming up, Maine drivers may not love what they’re seeing at the pump, but at least experts aren’t expecting a major price swing before the holiday.

According to WGME, GasBuddy says prices in Maine are likely to stay fairly steady heading into the long weekend, though small changes of a few cents in either direction are possible. GasBuddy’s Patrick De Haan says uncertainty in the oil market is making prices harder to predict, especially with concerns tied to the Strait of Hormuz and global oil movement.

De Haan told WGME that some local stations could drop slightly because oil prices dipped earlier in the week, while others could climb a bit as oil prices moved back up. He also noted that Maine’s current statewide average is $1.54 higher than it was at this time last year.

Even with higher prices, plenty of people are still expected to travel. AAA projects 45 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home for Memorial Day weekend, with about 39.1 million of them traveling by car. AAA says that would set a new Memorial Day travel record.

So, for Mainers heading to camp, the coast, a cookout, or just sitting in Route 1 traffic questioning every life decision, the advice is pretty simple: fill up when you see a decent price, don’t wait for a huge drop, and maybe brace yourself before looking at the total.
