Maine High School Evacuated After Threats Made During School Board Meeting
According to WMTW News 8, Maine's Mountain Valley High School was evacuated on Monday night during a school board meeting due to threats being made.
The apparent and vulgar threats happened as someone seemingly joined an ongoing Zoom call during Monday night's board meeting.
After the threats, the school was evacuated and the varsity basketball game that was underway in the gym was stopped and students and attendees sent home.
Superintendent of Schools, Deb Alden, said in a statement,
"Tonight during our RSU 10 School Board meeting there was an interruption on the Zoom platform. Vulgar comments and a threat to 'our schools' was made. We quickly involved the Rumford Police Department, paused the school board meeting, and ended the basketball game that was underway. We were able to identify the IP address, and the Rumford PD was able to make contact with the owner. It appears that this may have been a technology issue where other users inadvertently entered our meeting."
Alden said that out of an abundance of caution, Mountain Valley Schools would be closed on Tuesday, December 14th, but would reopen with a police presence on Wednesday, December 15th. She did go on to say that it's just out of caution and that the does believe "our schools are safe".
Rumford Police have made contact with the suspect and are investigating further. We will keep this story updated as more information becomes available.
