Maine Man Accused of Stealing More Than 4,000 Quarters From Local Business
When it comes to stealing things, I'm certainly no expert (because I've never done it), but I feel like stealing change would be overly cumbersome and...loud. Well, that's exactly what police say one Maine man allegedly did.
According to an article published by WGME 13, a Maine man has been accused of breaking into a local business not once, but two different times. Police say that back on April 22nd they had reason to believe that someone had broken into the Brooks Marine Supply Company in Bath, Maine.
The Marine Company told police at the time that someone had apparently broken into the store in the overnight hours and stole multiple items from the store including articles of clothing, boots and even sunglasses. Store staff said the value of the items taken was more than $1,000.
However, that's not where this story ends. WGME is reporting that just three days after the theft, the store was targeted again- this time for money. However, instead of stealing clothes, sunglasses or cash, the thief made away with $1,000 worth of quarters. That's FOUR THOUSAND quarters. I have so many questions about this.
Following the second reported break-in, police notified area businesses with Coinstar machines to keep an eye out for someone attempting to cash in a massive amount of quarters.
It wasn't until last Friday when police got a call from staff at Five County Credit Union in Bath alerting police that someone was attempting to turn in thousands of quarters for cash.
WGME says that police used the bank's surveillance footage to track the suspect, Shawn Toothaker, 47 of Bath, to his Green Acres apartment. Police searched the apartment and were able to located some of the stolen items from the marine shop.
Authorities then took Toothaker into custody and charged him with burglary and theft. At last check he was being held at Two Bridges Regional Jail.
Fun fact: According to Chat GPT, 4,000 quarters weigh about 12.5 pounds.
All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
