A new campaign in Maine is reminding drivers of a simple but important message: slow down, people walk here.

The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety has launched a community-driven pedestrian safety campaign aimed at reducing crashes involving people walking, especially in some of the state’s busiest urban areas.

The campaign, called “Slow Down, We Walk Here,” comes as Maine continues to see pedestrian deaths and serious crashes involving walkers. The effort is focused on encouraging safer driving habits while reminding drivers to stay alert for people crossing streets and walking through neighborhoods.

The campaign will focus heavily on Portland, Lewiston, and Auburn, where drivers, commuters, and pedestrians frequently share busy roadways and intersections.

“It serves as a simple reminder that the people crossing the street are our neighbors, friends, and our family,” said Lauren Stewart, Director of the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety.

The campaign officially launched at Lincoln Park in Portland and will continue throughout the summer. The Bureau of Highway Safety says the message will be promoted through transit ads, social media, and digital platforms in Portland, Lewiston, and Auburn.

The goal is to reach not only drivers, but also commuters and pedestrians, with a reminder that safety on Maine roads is a shared responsibility.

With summer traffic picking up and more people out walking, state officials are hoping the campaign helps drivers slow down, pay attention, and remember that every person crossing the street has somewhere, and someone, to get home to.
